The Signal - 1/29/13 playlist (Stephen Lawrenson interview and etc.)

by Chris Kocher from The Signal at 1:32 AM on 1·30·2013

[From 7-10 p.m. Tuesday]

Great to chat with (and finally meet in person) local power-pop songwriter Stephen Lawrenson. We had a good discussion of his new album, “Obscuriosity” and played tracks from it (as well as one Kinks cover). Here’s the song list:
“Edge of the World”
“Your Karma”
“Small White House”
“2nd Time Around”
“Autumn Almanac” (Kinks cover)
“Thank You”
“Pale Yellow”

From there, it was all the music I could fit into 90 minutes, starting with an extended rock/pop set:
“Splendid Isolation” – Warren Zevon
“Get Off This” – Cracker
“Pressure Point” – the Zutons
“I Spy” and “Disco 2000” – Pulp
“Mr. Psycho” – Space
“Fine Print” – Silverclub
“Zombie Zoo” – Tom Petty
“Voodoo Walk” – Ray Davies

Then a twangy set:
“A) Enlightenment B) Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C)” – Ray Wylie Hubbard
“Goin’ Home” – Malcolm Holcombe
“Blood Sweat Tears” – Jess Klein
“What Kind of Girl Were You?” – KC Clifford
“What Side of Town” – Terence Martin
“A Song from the Subliminal Hymnal” – John Flynn
“Railroad Man” – The Stray Birds

Then a quick Dave Davies birthday tribute:
“Living on a Thin Line”/“Unfinished Business”

And then a song tied to my Mad Trivia Party questions that followed:
“Phobia” – the Kinks

Next Tuesday at 7 p.m., I’ll air the interview I did this week with Canadian folk/jazz/swing trio My Sweet Patootie, who will perform Feb. 10 at Endicott Performing Arts Center. We’ll also share never-before-heard tracks from their new album, “Good Day.”
