This week’s episode juxtaposes “Cliges” and “Tristan and Isolde”, both romances, but in my opinion Chretien de Troyes is commenting on the adulterous relationship between Tristan and Isolde, wherein Isolde may be sharing her body with two men. I also touch on the use of magic and various symbolic elements pervasive in Medieval literature.

[From 7-10 p.m. Tuesday]

Really fantastic interview tonight with Vance Gilbert, one of my favorite singer/songwriters – he performs Saturday night at 6 On The Square in Oxford for the venue’s sixth anniversary celebration. We chatted about his career, his music, his advice to young songwriters and more. Here are his songs that we played before, during and after the interview:

“Old White Men”
“Ten Thousand Skies”
“Cry Like an Angel” (Shawn Colvin cover)
“Boy on a Train”
“Dragonfly Wings”
“Takin’ It All to Tennessee”
“Save the Last Dance” (The Drifters cover)
“Dear Amelia”
“That Front Porch Song”
“Icarus by Night”
“Unfamiliar Moon”

From there, a few more folk tunes from me:
“Cape Cod Girls” and “Sunny Afternoon” (The Kinks cover) – Baby Gramps (along with new station ID)
“Love Out Loud” – disappear fear (NEW)

Apprentice Jake took over for a bit:
“Takin’ It To The Streets” – The Doobie Brothers
“Fall Back Down” – Rancid
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” – Nirvana
“Jesus is Just Alright” – The Doobie Brothers

Then a couple more from me to round off the show:
“Original Love” – Josephine Oniyama
“Still Fighting the War” – Slaid Cleaves (NEW)

Next week, Texas singer/songwriter Billy Eli joins me in the studio to talk about his new album, “The Unexplainable Billy Eli.” Should be another great one.

This week’s episode opens up a discussion on Cliges, a French Medieval Arthurian tale. The themes of love, honor and valor are all present in abundance in this tale. This week, I focused on the theme of love, as I look at how love is depicted and treated in this story. Like most Medieval stories on love, the lovers tend to be afraid to show their love to one another out of fear of rejection. In the case of the lovers in Cliges this resolve with a match maker. I also look at the themes of valor and honor. Next week I continue my discussion on Cliges. Stay tuned!

After Bill died, a memorial was held at the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia. After a couple touching eulogies, Julian Koster plays the singing saw and Bill’s childhood friend Jeff Mangum (of Synthetic Flying Machine, Olivia Tremor Control, and that other band fame) leads the Elephant 6 Orchestra with a live performance of one of Bill’s finest songs, “Love Athena.”
Goodbye, Bill.
